WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER, the largest walk-in clinic in the world has been providing medical care since 2003. Serving more than 40,000 patients each month and seeing over 5,000 patients a day, it is one of the busiest clinics in California Now, WSHC is offering a unique opportunity for students to help run its mission. You can learn how to change lives one patient at a time by working with our existing health clinics around Los Angeles County for 2 weeks as part of your college experience. WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER is looking for motivated high-achieving students to help us reach another world record. Students interested in working at WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER must have completed a minimum of one semester or two quarters at an accredited university before the start date of their internship.


WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER is an independent, student-run organization that partners with major healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations to provide health services such as STD Testing, STI Treatment, and Pregnancy Testing. WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER specializes in providing quick and affordable health services through its walk-in model of care and has affiliated clinics located at LA Harbor College (LAHC), El Camino Community College District (ECCD), Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA), and Santa Monica College (SMC). WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTERS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, which relies on the support of donors.

How much does it cost to volunteer at WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER?


Non-medical volunteers will be provided food, lodging, and a stipend. Medical volunteers may need to provide their accommodations. All meals will be provided for medical volunteers by the WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTERS Medical Volunteers group.


How will medical volunteers be trained?


Medical volunteers will attend weekly training on all WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER policies and procedures. They will also have the opportunity to represent WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER at special events as well as learn more about the health needs of our patients. Medical volunteers are required to read, sign and return all forms prior to their participation in any activities; however, students will not be disadvantaged during their time volunteering.


What kind of experience/competencies should I have?


All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and enrolled in college. For medical volunteers, you must have your car and insurance to cover any substances administered on the premises. You should also be comfortable dealing with the public because you may be the only one answering calls and providing services to patients on a daily basis.

Who can volunteer?


Any student that is enrolled in an accredited college or university in the Los Angeles area can apply. We are looking for people who are interested in serving others, who want to learn more about healthcare, and/or who want to participate in an alternative non-traditional summer experience.

 Who and how many needs to be served?


WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER is a walk-in clinic that provides services related to healthcare. Patients who would benefit from our services, such as those who have been exposed to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are at higher risk of contracting a disease. As such, the clinic primarily serves individuals with STIs, the homeless, those who feel that they no longer want to use or want to continue using their current form of birth control, and young adults who are unsure about their sexual orientation.


 What are the hours?


As a walk-in clinic, WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER operates for roughly five to six hours each day. The time and days of operation are variable and flexible. Schedules will be discussed with volunteers after completing an application.
