People have been talking about climate change for years, but now it's finally changing. I attended the Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA), which is a school that teaches technology. They recently put in an application saying it will be 29 degrees hotter and 30% more humid by the year 2030. HTA students have to take their clothes off every day and they are worried because of these huge changes, mostly because they live next to Oahu beach park where there is water, which makes people think that this worse climate change will happen in less than twenty years.
The governor of Hawaii, Governor David Ige, said that he thinks the change will be worse than it should be. The temperature in the future is predicted to rise at least 10 degrees and maybe even more. He also said that this is serious and that if we don't do anything about it now, then everything will get ruined because of all of the pollutants that are being let out into the ocean and atmosphere. Hawaiians are worried about why these changes are happening in their state most likely because they live on an island. They don't want their beaches to disappear and they don't want all of their water resources to get dried up or polluted.
What caused the climate changes in Hawaii?
The major cause of this climate change is mainly global warming. Global warming happens when there is an increased amount of carbon dioxide and methane being released into the air. This causes other things like saturation and stratification which makes it harder for carbon dioxide to get out of the atmosphere. Because of all this happening, we can see that there is more carbon dioxide than ever being let out than usual by human activities such as cars, factories, or anything that burns fossil fuels.
What are some of the risks of climate change?
The major risk of climate change is that if it gets colder, this means that there will be less water in the rivers (because they are frozen) and there will be less food available to eat. Also, lots of people might die because they don't have enough food or water or they get caught in a storm while they are outside.
How has climate change affected Hawaii in the past?
Climate change hasn't affected Hawaii in the past very much. We don't usually see intense hurricanes and most of our other weather is always like this (or at least for a very long time). The main change is that the rainforest (where all of our plants and animals live) was cut down by tourists.
Chronology of Events
10,000 BC: The ice Age starts and glaciers spread across America. 1550: First recorded voyage to Hawaii by Captain James Cook; first contact with Hawaiians. 1778: First recorded arrival of pigs and cattle to Hawaii. 1839: The main landmass breaks away from the Pascua (Bolivia) Islands, creating the Wallace line [I claim my family is part of this lineage, but it's not clear where they came from]. 1853: British explorer George Vancouver names Honolulu after Queen Victoria after sighting dense clouds gathered in a small area.
What will climate change do in the future?
This is what we don't know about the future. We don't know how it will affect us or what is going to happen to the environment. The main thing that we don't know is if it will get warmer or colder than we are used to. There is some evidence that shows that we might have more extreme weather and more extreme temperatures and more out of place hurricanes. But there is also some evidence that shows that this might not happen at all, so this question is still a mystery.
Conclusion
Overall the effects of climate change are negative and The Hawaii Technology Academy foresees that it will get worse as time goes on. They also have some suggestions as to what should be done about this problem when it gets so bad. They suggest that people should learn more about climate change, use less harmful chemicals, and cut down on pollution. HTA also wants people to start recycling as much as they can so we can stop polluting our earth more than we already do. I don't think that humans are causing all of this because there are just too many different reasons for why this is happening.
