The Ultimate Saltzer Health Checklist

Health Checklist

Is your Saltzer diet healthy? If not, you could be at risk of a variety of health problems. This article will provide 5 simple tips that will increase your chances of living a healthy and happy life.

1) Check you're getting enough protein!  The importance of protein intake cannot be overstated, as it's the building block for muscles and neurotransmitters in the brain. However, too much is bad for you- so don't forget to check that your body is getting enough!

2) Don't forget about water!  We all know how vital water is for our bodies and how important it is to drink lots every day - which means we should always be mindful that we're drinking plenty.

3) Your brain is your biggest muscle !!!  You need to be physically active regularly! The more you move, the less likely you are to develop memory problems and problems with concentration.

4) The NAP (nap) is good for you. It gives the body a break from over-stressing the mind and helps boost immunity. I often recommend napping for 30 minutes at lunchtime, before getting back to work.

5) Lastly but not least, make sure that your diet is low in refined sugars and simple carbohydrates (malt, white flour), but high in complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats.

If I go on the Saltzer diet will I lose weight?

This is a very common question and one that we get asked all the time. The answer is simple - if you currently eat quite a lot of junk food, and cut that out, whilst replacing it with healthy alternatives (lean meats, vegetables, etc.) then you are almost certainly going to lose weight. The Saltzer diet is one of moderation- So remember to only eat till you're full (but not too full) and always try your best to consume low-fat or even fat-free foods.

How's my weight going to stay stable even if I eat healthily?

If you are currently overweight then your recipe for disaster is to go on a diet and lose all of the weight but then go back to your old ways. By eating healthy, and following the Saltzer diet you will find that the weight will stay stable naturally. I used to weigh around 10 stone when I was younger - but due to having a high-carbohydrate, salt-filled diet, it had climbed to 17 stone by my mid-twenties.

I want to eat a low-carbohydrate diet - will the Saltzer diet work for me?

I'd say that it works. However, if you eat a lot of carbohydrates and sugars then you're going to notice the difference straight away. The best thing to do is sample some of the good-carbohydrate foods (brown rice, low-fat pasta) and see for yourself. You'll soon be eating as much of these as possible, and not just your usual high-carb stuff like bread, potatoes, biscuits, etc.

Can I eat any food I want?

The Saltzer diet is a diet of moderation. It's also not a low-fat diet, but a whole food nutrition diet that incorporates good carbohydrates along with lean proteins and healthy fats. The whole idea is to enjoy the foods that you do eat and to manage your portion sizes accordingly. There are no rules in this area - so if you don't like fish then substitute it for something else (e.g. chicken). Vegetables, fruit, and lean meats are also big on the list of naturally healthy foods that you can enjoy now and then.

Conclusion

Will the Saltzer diet work for you? Only time will tell, but there is a good chance that the answer will be yes. It's not a miracle diet that is going to solve all of your weight problems in one week, but it's a good call if you're looking to lose weight gradually and sustainably.
